ONE IDEA

Grow by getting away from your work.

THE WHY

Separation is necessary for creative and physiological progress.

MY THOUGHTS/ PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

To be great at anything you need to do a lot of it. But at some point, additional work will only yield incremental gains. Instead of banging you head trying to do more and more and more, try to get away from it completely and see what happens.

Some of my most cathartic and breakthrough moments have come from times of being away from my work. I can distinctly remember one Christmas where I took two weeks off of Badminton completely. When I came back, I was expecting to be rusty, but I was amazed at how loose and creative I was. I was finding holes in my training partners and felt I was mentally one step ahead of them all. Even last week I was racking my brain around an athlete I am working with, I took the weekend off, and it came to me this morning!

I’d like to also add that sometimes this separation requires a radical change in geography. Get out of your house, get out of your regular café/ workspace, and do something completely different. Your surroundings will really change the way you think.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
